Guatemala has a rich history of cacao growing but the industry almost died in the 90s and 2000s, as farmers favoured growing more profitable crops like coffee, sugar and cardamom. Now, after the birth of the craft chocolate movement and development of the specialty cacao industry, farmers are returning to cacao growing and focussing on the high-end market.
These particular beans are distributed by Cacao Verapaz, a company set up in 2014 and co-owned by Uncommon Cacao. Cacao Verapaz works exclusively with indigenous Q’eqchi’ Maya farmers and they were the first company to ever export fine flavour cacao from Guatemala.
